Canada eTA Eligibility for Italian Citizens
Canada, a country famous for its stunning landscapes and diverse culture, is welcoming visitors from around the world, including citizens of Italy. To make travel easier, Canada introduced the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system in March 2016, with Italy being a launch member of this program.
What is a Canada eTA?
Foreign nationals who are flying into Canada without a visa must have the Canada eTA to enter the country. It can be used for a maximum of five years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. It has an electronic link to your passport.
eTA Eligibility for Italian Citizens
If you’re an Italian citizen, you’re qualified for a Canada eTA. This makes it possible for you to enter Canada quickly for short visits (a maximum of 90 days) for things like travel, business, tourism, or medical visits.
eTA Requirements for Italian Citizens
To apply for a Canada eTA, Italian citizens must meet the following requirements:
- You must have a valid Italian passport that is machine-readable.
- You have to be traveling to Canada via airplane.
- You must be at least 18 years old; minors must apply through a parent or legal guardian.
- Your purpose of visit has to be short-term - tourism, business, transit, or medical visits.

Application Process
The entire eTA application procedure is done online. Here are some points to keep in mind:
- Apply at least 72 hours before your planned departure date.
- The application generally takes about 5 -15 minutes to complete.
- While most applications are processed in a matter of minutes, some might take up to 72.
- When the eTA is accepted, it electronically links to your passport.
Benefits of the Canada eTA
The eTA program offers several benefits to Italian citizens:
- It is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
- You can visit the country multiple times, but each stay can last for only 90 days.
- It offers quick authorization and delivery via email.
- You can apply for it using a desktop, tablet, or mobile device.
Important Notes
- An eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. The final say rests with the border service officer at the border.
- If you plan to stay in Canada for more than 90 days or for purposes other than tourism, business, transit, or medical visits, you'll need to apply for a different type of visa.
- You can apply for a full visitor's visa if your eTA application is rejected.
Italian citizens can anticipate that their eTA application will be processed and approved quickly - often within 5 minutes. The authorization is sent as a PDF file via email. There's no need to print anything because the eTA is electronically connected to your passport in the Canadian Immigration System.

To ensure a smooth arrival, understanding entry requirements is crucial. Citizens of certain visa-exempt countries can obtain an eTA online. For some nationalities, a traditional visa is required for entry and in a very limited number of cases travelers can enter Canada solely with a valid passport (without a visa or eTA).
